September 2005: Cheryl Rodriguez

“I’m Cheryl Rodriguez, I teach 8th Grade Math at O.J. Actis Jr. High.

I decided to become a Math teacher at age 12. I tutored my friends and I found I loved it and that’s when I fell in love with teaching.

I love teenagers, especially 8th graders, their unpredictable. I don’t have a job where I’m sitting at a desk. Class is different, even from day to day, and I love that.

I want them to set goals, and I constantly talk about college, almost every day, and how math relates to them getting into a college.

If I can relate the lesson to something that they love in their life, to try to get them to relate to it, I do that. Make sure if your child says that they can’t do that, that you send them to their teacher or someone else who’s willing to give them the extra help.

The saying in my class is “Math is Life.”
