October 2005: Sonia Romero

“My name is Sonia Romero and I teach at Golden Valley; I teach Spanish for non-native speakers.

The best thing about teaching at Golden Valley is that I get to teach the language to the kids and the culture. I enjoy teaching the culture to the kids and I also enjoy teaching them the standard Spanish and I also teach them a little bit of dialects.

To get them ready for the real world and have a job, especially in Bakersfield, they need to be bilingual; we have a lot of Hispanics.

I like to get up every single day thinking that I’m going to teach my kids something new. At the end of the school year I expect them to be ready for level two and to be using what they have learned.

I give my kids tough love, so when it comes to getting other people’s assignments I have no tolerance, it goes in the trash.

For all the parents that have some Spanish background, encourage your kids to speak Spanish. It’s going to benefit them a lot.”
